The 5-litre V8 Petrol special 70th anniversary edition Defenders were announced in January 2018 two years after production finished. To be able to offer these vehicles legally, good, used 2011-2016 model year Defenders were procured and converted, with a variety of trim and paint configurations.
JLR Classic said they would make "up to 150" vehicles, costing £150,000 for 90s and £160,000 for 110s. Whether 150 were actually made would be interesting to find out. Presumably there was some flexibility in the wording in case they weren't able to sell 150 at the huge price tags presented. The fact that each vehicle doesn't bear a unique identifying plaque is odd considering the hefty price tag and exclusivity of the edition, when other limited edition Defenders do have uniquely numbered badges
Three prototypes were built, Y8WKS (a red 90), Y8HUE (a white 90) and Y8GSK (a black 110). The first and third were bought in October 2017 and the second in January 2018 for a press launch in March 2018. So presumably the development took a less than 5 months from start to finish. Vehicles have continued to be made and delivered through 2019 and 2020. Most UK vehicles are registered on V8-prefixed registration numbers upon delivery to the customer.
The vehicles presented here are those registered in the UK before their conversion. Any vehicles that were imported, converted and subsequently exported are not currently known about.
