Why? The problem is that Td5 vehicles with less than 100k miles show 6 digits on the odometer with the last digit being a decimal, so with only a quick glance, 95432.2 could be read as 954322. There are hundreds of vehicles that have had the mileage incorrectly entered during the MOT. If you had a table of all Defenders in rows and a colum of the "latest mileage", then sorted by highest to lowest, you would find over 500 vehicles that had more than 500,000 miles on the clock. The only way to find the real high mileage vehicles is to look at the vehicle's entire MOT history to decide if a high mileage value for one MOT is a mistake or not.

To find the best estimation of the highest mileage Defenders in the UK I did the following:

• Most recent MOT mileage (in miles not km) is greater than 400,000
• Has more than 3 MOT mileages > 100,000
• Check the MOT history of each vehicle to ensure it increases at each MOT test

There were 20 vehicles discounted for the following reasons:

• Mileage jumps up and down across the years
• A typo from one year was continued in multiple MOT tests "last year was 338,000 so 34,625.2 must be 346,252"
• Looks like a speedometer was replaced with a higher mileage one

Errors with the Td5 vehicles can easily be explained by the odometer decimal, but earlier vehicles and Pumas don't have this. Many of the high mileage Defenders are 300Tdis that have mileages jumping up and down over the years. It is possible that older vehicles have had speedometer problems, which may have been replaced with a used one showing a random mileage. An example is K193YKV, that went from 107k in 2013 to 481k in 2014). However, P228ENP (listed below) is a case of a false positive; it has a varied odometer history, but it was imported to the UK with a KM speedo, which appears to have been changed to miles and so the initially high km value dropped accordingly.

There may be Defenders not in the list that also had high mileages, but were scrapped or exported before 2005 (when online MOT records began), or have not been used since. Suffice to say, bear this in mind when looking at the list! Get in touch if you think any vehicles are missing!
